Cos when I read articles in the US, there's a lot of comments about HK, or China.
So I ask myself.
What's wrong with HK or China?
Most people have food to eat, a roof over their heads, jobs, etc...
So... what's the problem?
Yes, some parts of China are still poor, but China has brought a lot of people out of poverty over the past 30 years. So it's probably still work in progress.
In HK, it's a highly developed country, but it's small. Many people live in small homes cos homes are expensive. Very similar to Singapore. Most people are still doing ok enough...
So.... what's the problem?
Why does America, or Americans think that China is such a terrible place to live in?
Or why the big hooha over the new laws in HK?
Yes, there might be some concerns about those laws... cos it allows China to reach into HK and arrest people. But... if you're just a normal person... what's there to worry about?
So I wonder... what makes a good Government?
There's no such thing as a perfect Government.
I mean, perfect would be, free food and homes for everyone, everyone gets a big house, with free maids, free cars, no tax, etc... no such thing right?
Governments have to implement policies. And in any policy, someone wins, someone loses.
Someone else is gonna have to pay for it.
Now, of course the concern for a powerful Government is that it potentially can turn into a dictatorship, rife with corruption. And that would really mess up a country.
But besides that... I would say any Government, whereby a citizen is able to study, grow up, work, earn, have a home, have kids, grow old, live life fairly safely... and increase the standard of living of the citizens...
I think that's a good enough Government.
But that's maybe cos of my own values.
I value the ability to keep my head down and work and live my own life.
But some other people might want to step up and criticize the Government, hold protests, etc...
Now, I'm not naive, I believe that all Governments have some sort of shady business, some form of favourtism, or palm greasing, under table money.
I believe there's someone somewhere in any Government who's doing something he/she shouldn't be doing.
But if overall, generally, the people of the country is living fine...
Then what's the problem?
Yes, if this gets out of hand, eventually the well being of the citizens will suffer...
But when I look at HK and China... And I look at the US...
I think that China has done a lot of their citizens for the past 30 years. Much more than what the US Government has done for their citizens.
Really. China has become a very progressive country, high in technology, with growing influence on the global stage.
In my opinion, the US is just intentionally making trouble with China to keep delay it's ascent.
China's economy isn't there yet,
Military might, not there yet,
Overall technology not there yet, etc...
So US tries to find ways to bring China down, hinder it's progress.
But the way I see it, if we look into the future another 30-60 years...
There's good chance that China will match the US in many aspects.
So what makes a good Government?
In the short run, as long as citizens are ok to make a living and live a fairly ok life, that's good enough. There's bound to be rich, some poor, etc... but as long as most people are able to live, eat, have a home, jobs, then that's probably good enough.
In the middle and long term, then I think like any company, there needs to be controls to keep the Government in check, otherwise there is good chance that there will be hanky panky going around.
