We all know that maternity cost in Singapore is expensive. Is there a more economical option for prenatal to delivery then in Singapore?
If you are a Singaporean or permanent resident of Singapore, have you heard of the subsidized route? In this case, you go to a polyclinic to get a referral to a public hospital of your choice (e.g. KKH, NUH, SGH) to begin the prenatal checkups leading up to the delivery. You can read the section under subsidized rates on KKH website here to find out more about how to be a subsidized patient.
Take note, even if you go to the public hospital, there are both private and subsidized option. The private option does not require you to get a referral from the polyclinic, and you get to choose a doctor of your liking, who will be with you from antenatal to delivery and post delivery. For the public option, you get any doctor that is assigned to you, and this could vary from one visit to another. During your gynae visits, not all visits will involve ultrasound scans. There are mainly these few scans -- the scan on your first visit, Oscar scan (if you decide to go for it), detailed scan and growth scan. Any additional scan is subjected to the gynae's discretion. On the day of delivery, the doctor who will help you is the doctor on duty (and if your delivery is long enough, it could be a different doctors you see). For patients going for the subsidized option, the best ward class you get is B2+, meaning your hubby will need to go home after visiting hours (no staying with you throughout your stay since this is only allowed in single wards). The subsidized option for the gynaecologist visits have no packages, it's simply pay per use.
What's the cost difference then?
For outpatient costs, take a look at the subsidized and unsubsidized costs in KKH, SGH and NUH here. For Singapore citizens, each consultation cost is less than $40 for the subsidized option. Take note this cost does not include any tests, scans and screening. For private patient, from what I understand, most sign up for a package, so the per consultation cost may not be as applicable.
How about the cost during delivery (inpatient)?
- SGH:
- NUH (see under B2 and C class ward for subsidized rate)
According to the bill estimator from KKH which you can find here, a two day stay for Singapore citizens for normal delivery (with no complications, etc.) at B2 ward costs $2310, which you can pay fully with Medisave.
So if it's you, would you consider this route?
